Educational Resources for Geomatics

This CDROM contains dynamic 3D visualizations and static images used in teaching the basic concepts and capabilities of geomatics. Geomatics is a multi-disciplinary field that includes surveying and mapping, geodesy, global positioning systems (GPS), remote sensing and photogrammetry, geographic information systems (GIS) and cartography. Where geospatial questions are concerned, the contemporary forms of these disciplines are unified by their dependence on a common knowledge set that is comprised of geographic positioning and a reliance on digital geospatial data.

The visualizations contained on this CDROM were developped at the Laboratory for Applied Geomatics and GIS Science (LAGGISS) at the University of Ottawa under a grant from the Senate Committee on Teaching. All of the animations and images were created by Zoran Reljic or Professor M. Sawada. Posters were created by individual students at the undergraduate level.

Windows Media Player DownloadAll animations on this CDROM are in Windows Media 9 (or later) format (*.wmv). The Windows Media Player can be downloaded freely at the Microsoft windows media download website http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/player/download/

Below you can click on any of the movie thumbnails to access the high resolution animation in Windows Media 9 format.

Remote Sensing (RS) "Remote Sensing is the science and art of obtaining information about an object, area, or phenomenon through the analysis of data acquired by a device that is not in contact with the object, area, or phenomenon under investigation." - Lillesand and Keifer

Global Positioning Systems (GPS) The Global Positioning System, or GPS, was originally named NAVSTAR. It is composed of 24 satellites. Timing signals are used to determine individual locations anywhere on earth.

Geomatics Concepts Basic to all geomatics disciplines is the concepts of positioning and map projections. Positioning in the system of longitude and latitude is presented in dynamic visualizations.

Geographic Information Systems GIS is an integrative science within which data from all of the subfields of geomatics are integrated. Analyses in GIS are based on the ability to decompose the world around us into discrete thematic layers.

Posters Students of geomatics apply this science to many diverse fields of study. Some of these are presented here in high-resolution poster format.

Image Gallery Images of both maps and of the earth are useful for student projects, papers or illustration. In the /Images subfolder on the CDROM images created within the Department of Geography are offered for enrichment.
